Stepwell (Vav)
Stepwell, Gujarati vav, Hindi baoli or baori, subterranean edifice and water source, are complex engineering feats and stunning examples of ancient Indian Architecture.
'Vav' hold a powerful aura - the architecture knowledge afforded by them can be felt when stepping into one - this photo collection is a meditative look into historic stepwells and the uniform power these places hold. The photographs have taken me to off the beaten track of Ahmedabad, India (few of the best architectural hidden gems I have ever visited). These palaces also served as "cool sanctuaries” are celebrated through their symmetrical framing and warmth of natural materials.
The buildings are reflective of power, wealth and history. Architecture offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore one's self through the unique visual narrative that each viewer develops. I reckon these stepwells are so intriguing that it'll make anyone want to step into and explore the extraordinary piece of architecture.
